Tin/vanadium redox electrolyte for battery-like energy storage capacity combined with supercapacitor-like power handling

2016, Lee, Juhan, Krüner, Benjamin, Tolosa, Aura, Sathyamoorthi, Sethuraman, Kim, Daekyu, Choudhury, Soumyadip, Seo, Kum-Hee, Presser, Volker

We introduce a high performance hybrid electrochemical energy storage system based on an aqueous electrolyte containing tin sulfate (SnSO4) and vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4) with nanoporous activated carbon. The energy storage mechanism of this system benefits from the unique synergy of concurrent electric double-layer formation, reversible tin redox reactions, and three-step redox reactions of vanadium. The hybrid system showed excellent electrochemical properties such as a promising energy capacity (ca. 75 W h kg−1, 30 W h L−1) and a maximum power of up to 1.5 kW kg−1 (600 W L−1, 250 W m−2), exhibiting capacitor-like galvanostatic cycling stability and a low level of self-discharging rate.

Nanoscale friction on MoS2/graphene heterostructures

2023, Liu, Zhao, Szczefanowicz, Bartosz, Lopes, J. Marcelo J., Gan, Ziyang, George, Antony, Turchanin, Andrey, Bennewitz, Roland

Stacked hetero-structures of two-dimensional materials allow for a design of interactions with corresponding electronic and mechanical properties. We report structure, work function, and frictional properties of 1 to 4 layers of MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition on epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001). Experiments were performed by atomic force microscopy in ultra-high vacuum. Friction is dominated by adhesion which is mediated by a deformation of the layers to adapt the shape of the tip apex. Friction decreases with increasing number of MoS2 layers as the bending rigidity leads to less deformation. The dependence of friction on applied load and bias voltage can be attributed to variations in the atomic potential corrugation of the interface, which is enhanced by both load and applied bias. Minimal friction is obtained when work function differences are compensated.

The interaction of chondroitin sulfate with a lipid monolayer observed by using nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy

2021, Szekeres, Gergo Peter, Krekic, Szilvia, Miller, Rebecca L., Mero, Mark, Pagel, Kevin, Heiner, Zsuzsanna

The first vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectra of chondroitin sulfate (CS) interacting with dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) at air–liquid interface are reported here, collected at a laser repetition rate of 100 kHz. By studying the VSFG spectra in the regions of 1050–1450 cm−1, 2750–3180 cm−1, and 3200–3825 cm−1, it was concluded that in the presence of Ca2+ ions, the head groups together with the head-group-bound water molecules in the DPPC monolayer are strongly influenced by the interaction with CS, while the organization of the phospholipid tails remains mostly unchanged. The interactions were observed at a CS concentration below 200 nM, which exemplifies the potential of VSFG in studying biomolecular interactions at low physiological concentrations. The VSFG spectra recorded in the O–H stretching region at chiral polarization combination imply that CS molecules are organized into ordered macromolecular superstructures with a chiral secondary structure.

Cation exchange synthesis of AgBiS2 quantum dots for highly efficient solar cells

2024, Senina, Alina, Prudnikau, Anatol, Wrzesińska-Lashkova, Angelika, Vaynzof, Yana, Paulus, Fabian

Silver bismuth sulfide (AgBiS2) nanocrystals have emerged as a promising eco-friendly, low-cost solar cell absorber material. Their direct synthesis often relies on the hot-injection method, requiring the application of high temperatures and vacuum for prolonged times. Here, we demonstrate an alternative synthetic approach via a cation exchange reaction. In the first-step, bis(stearoyl)sulfide is used as an air-stable sulfur precursor for the synthesis of small, monodisperse Ag2S nanocrystals at room-temperature. In a second step, bismuth cations are incorporated into the nanocrystal lattice to form ternary AgBiS2 nanocrystals, without altering their size and shape. When implemented into photovoltaic devices, AgBiS2 nanocrystals obtained by cation exchange reach power conversion efficiencies of up to 7.35%, demonstrating the efficacy of the new synthetic approach for the formation of high-quality, ternary semiconducting nanocrystals.
