- ItemUniqueness in inverse elastic scattering with finitely many incident waves(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2009) Elschner, Johannes; Yamamoto, MasahiroWe consider the third and fourth exterior boundary value problems of linear isotropic elasticity and present uniqueness results for the corresponding inverse scattering problems with polyhedral-type obstacles and a finite number of incident plane elastic waves. Our approach is based on a reflection principle for the Navier equation.
- ItemGlobal uniqueness in determining polygonal periodic structures with a minimal number of incident plane waves(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2010) Elschner, Johannes; Hu, GuanghuiIn this paper, we investigate the inverse problem of recovering a two-dimensional perfectly reflecting diffraction grating from the scattered waves measured above the structure. Inspired by a novel idea developed by Bao, Zhang and Zou [to appear in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.], we present a complete characterization of the global uniqueness in determining polygonal periodic structures using a minimal number of incident plane waves. The idea in this paper combines the reflection principle for the Helmholtz equation and the dihedral group theory. We characterize all periodic polygonal structures that cannot be identified by one incident plane wave, including the resonance case where a Rayleigh frequency is allowed. Furthermore, we show that those unidentifiable gratings provide non-uniqueness examples for appropriately chosen wave number and incident angles. We also indicate and fix a gap in the proof of the main theorem of Elschner and Yamamoto [Z. Anal. Anwend., 26 (2007), 165-177], and generalize the uniqueness results of that paper.
- ItemAnalysis of electronic models for solar cells including energy resolved defect densities(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2010) Glitzky, AnnegretWe introduce an electronic model for solar cells including energy resolved defect densities. The resulting drift-diffusion model corresponds to a generalized van Roosbroeck system with additional source terms coupled with ODEs containing space and energy as parameters for all defect densities. The system has to be considered in heterostructures and with mixed boundary conditions from device simulation. We give a weak formulation of the problem. If the boundary data and the sources are compatible with thermodynamic equilibrium the free energy along solutions decays monotonously. In other cases it may be increasing, but we estimate its growth. We establish boundedness and uniqueness results and prove the existence of a weak solution. This is done by considering a regularized problem, showing its solvability and the boundedness of its solutions independent of the regularization level.
- ItemFurther regularity and uniqueness results for a non-isothermal Cahn--Hilliard equation(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2020) Ipocoana, Erica; Zafferi, AndreaThe aim of this paper is to establish new regularity results for a non-isothermal Cahn--Hilliard system in the two-dimensional setting. The main achievement is a crucial L∞ estimate for the temperature, obtained by a suitable Moser iteration scheme. Our results in particular allow us to get a new simplified version of the uniqueness proof for the considered model.
- ItemGibbs point processes on path space: Existence, cluster expansion and uniqueness(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2021) Zass, AlexanderWe study a class of infinite-dimensional diffusions under Gibbsian interactions, in the context of marked point configurations: The starting points belong to R^d, and the marks are the paths of Langevin diffusions. We use the entropy method to prove existence of an infinite-volume Gibbs point process and use cluster expansion tools to provide an explicit activity domain in which uniqueness holds.
- ItemRegularity and uniqueness in quasilinear parabolic systems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2008) Krejčí, Pavel; Panizzi, LuciaInspired by a problem in steel metallurgy, we prove the existence, regularity, uniqueness, and continuous data dependence of solutions to a coupled parabolic system in a smooth bounded 3D domain, with nonlinear and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The nonlinear coupling takes place in the diffusion coefficient. The proofs are based on anisotropic estimates in tangential and normal directions, and on a refined variant of the Gronwall lemma.
- ItemExistence of bounded steady state solutions to spin-polarized drift-diffusion systems(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2008) Glitzky, Annegret; Gärtner, KlausWe study a stationary spin-polarized drift-diffusion model for semiconductor spintronic devices. This coupled system of continuity equations and a Poisson equation with mixed boundary conditions in all equations has to be considered in heterostructures. In 3D we prove the existence and boundedness of steady states. If the Dirichlet conditions are compatible or nearly compatible with thermodynamic equilibrium the solution is unique. The same properties are obtained for a space discretized version of the problem: Using a Scharfetter-Gummel scheme on 3D boundary conforming Delaunay grids we show existence, boundedness and, for small applied voltages, the uniqueness of the discrete solution.
- ItemUniqueness in determining polyhedral sound-hard obstacles with a single incoming wave(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2008) Elschner, Johannes; Yamamoto, MasahiroWe consider the inverse acoustic scattering problem of determining a sound-hard obstacle by far field measurements. It is proved that a polyhedral scatterer in $R^n, nge 2$, consisting of finitely many solid polyhedra, is uniquely determined by a single incoming plane wave.
- ItemAnalysis of a spin-polarized drift-diffusion model(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2008) Glitzky, AnnegretWe introduce a spin-polarized drift-diffusion model for semiconductor spintronic devices. This coupled system of continuity equations and a Poisson equation with mixed boundary conditions in all equations has to be considered in heterostructures. We give a weak formulation of this problem and prove an existence and uniqueness result for the instationary problem. If the boundary data is compatible with thermodynamic equilibrium the free energy along the solution decays monotonously and exponentially to its equilibrium value. In other cases it may be increasing but we estimate its growth. Moreover we give upper and lower estimates for the solution.
- ItemOn a higher order convective Cahn-Hilliard type equation(Berlin : Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik, 2010) Korzec, Maciek Dominik; Rybka, PiotrA convective Cahn-Hilliard type equation of sixth order that describes the faceting of a growing surface is considered with periodic boundary conditions. By using a Galerkin approach the existence of weak solutions to this sixth order partial differential equation is established in $L^2(0,T; dot H^3_per)$. Furthermore stronger regularity results have been derived and these are used to prove uniqueness of the solutions. Additionally a numerical study shows that solutions behave similarly as for the better known convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The transition from coarsening to roughening is analyzed, indicating that the characteristic length scale decreases logarithmically with increasing deposition rate
