The dream of human beings for long living has stimulated the rapid development of biomedical and healthcare equipment. However, conventional biomedical and healthcare devices have shortcomings such as short service life, large equipment size, and high potential safety hazards. Indeed, the power supply for conventional implantable device remains predominantly batteries. The emerging nanogenerators, which harvest micro/nanomechanical energy and thermal energy from human beings and convert into electrical energy, provide an ideal solution for self‐powering of biomedical devices. The combination of nanogenerators and biomedicine has been accelerating the development of self‐powered biomedical equipment. This article first introduces the operating principle of nanogenerators and then reviews the progress of nanogenerators in biomedical applications, including power supply, smart sensing, and effective treatment. Besides, the microbial disinfection and biodegradation performances of nanogenerators have been updated. Next, the protection devices have been discussed such as face mask with air filtering function together with real‐time monitoring of human health from the respiration and heat emission. Besides, the nanogenerator devices have been categorized by the types of mechanical energy from human beings, such as the body movement, tissue and organ activities, energy from chemical reactions, and gravitational potential energy. Eventually, the challenges and future opportunities in the applications of nanogenerators are delivered in the conclusive remarks. The combination of nanogenerator and biomedicine have been accelerating the development of self‐powered biomedical devices, which show a bright future in biomedicine and healthcare such as smart sensing, and therapy.

High-performance electronics and optoelectronics of monolayer tungsten diselenide full film from pre-seeding strategy
(Weinheim : Wiley, 2021) Zhang, Shu; Pang, Jinbo; Cheng, Qilin; Yang, Feng; Chen, Yu; Liu, Yu; Li, Yufen; Gemming, Thomas; Liu, Xiaoyan; Ibarlucea, Bergoi; Yang, Jiali; Liu, Hong; Zhou, Weijia; Cuniberti, Gianaurelio; Rümmeli, Mark H.
Tungsten diselenide (WSe2) possesses extraordinary electronic properties for applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and emerging exciton physics. The synthesis of monolayer WSe2 film is of topmost for device arrays and integrated circuits. The monolayer WSe2 film has yet been reported by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach, and the nucleation mechanism remains unclear. Here, we report a pre-seeding strategy for finely regulating the nuclei density at an early stage and achieving a fully covered film after chemical vapor deposition growth. The underlying mechanism is heterogeneous nucleation from the pre-seeding tungsten oxide nanoparticles. At first, we optimized the precursor concentration for pre-seeding. Besides, we confirmed the superiority of the pre-seeding method, compared with three types of substrate pretreatments, including nontreatment, sonication in an organic solvent, and oxygen plasma. Eventually, the high-quality synthetic WSe2 monolayer film exhibits excellent device performance in field-effect transistors and photodetectors. We extracted thermodynamic activation energy from the nucleation and growth data. Our results may shed light on the wafer-scale production of homogeneous monolayer films of WSe2, other 2D materials, and their van der Waals heterostructures.

Effect of Viscosity on Microswimmers: A Comparative Study
(Weinheim : Wiley, 2021) Nsamela, Audrey; Sharan, Priyanka; Garcia‐Zintzun, Aidee; Heckel, Sandra; Chattopadhyay, Purnesh; Wang, Linlin; Wittmann, Martin; Gemming, Thomas; Saenz, James; Simmchen, Juliane
Although many biological fluids like blood and mucus exhibit high viscosities, there are still many open questions concerning the swimming behavior of microswimmers in highly viscous media, limiting research to idealized laboratory conditions instead of application-oriented scenarios. Here, we analyze the effect of viscosity on the swimming speed and motion pattern of four kinds of microswimmers of different sizes which move by contrasting propulsion mechanisms: two biological swimmers (bovine sperm cells and Bacillus subtilis bacteria) which move by different bending patterns of their flagella and two artificial swimmers with catalytic propulsion mechanisms (alginate microtubes and Janus Pt@SiO2 spherical microparticles). Experiments consider two different media (glycerol and methylcellulose) with increasing viscosity, but also the impact of surface tension, catalyst activity and diffusion coefficients are discussed and evaluated.

A Novel Large-Scale, Multilayer, and Facilely Aligned Micropatterning Technique Based on Flexible and Reusable SU-8 Shadow Masks
(Weinheim : Wiley, 2019) Moradi, Somayeh; Bandari, Nooshin; Bandari, Vineeth Kumar; Zhu, Feng; Schmidt, Oliver G.
A simple method to fabricate flexible, mechanically robust, and reusable SU-8 shadow masks is demonstrated. This shadow mask technology has high pattern flexibility as various shapes with different dimensions can be created. The fabricated shadow masks are characterized in terms of the resolution, reusability, and capability of multilayer surface micropatterning. Fabrication of a new plastic photomask for the exposure process simplifies the shadow mask fabrication process and results in higher resolution in the shadow mask structures compared to the commercial chromium photomasks. For the multilayer surface micropatterning technology, a simple and fast alignment technique based on SU-8 pillars and without usage of any microscopic tools is reported. This unique method leads to a less complicated alignment process with the alignment accuracy of ≈2 µm. The proposed shadow mask technology can be easily employed for wafer-scale micropatterning process. The capability of fabricated SU-8 shadow masks in micropatterning on polymer thin films is evaluated by fabricating metallic contacts on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) samples and electrical characterization. © 2019 The Authors. Silicon-Based Integrated Label-Free Optofluidic Biosensors: Latest Advances and Roadmap
(Weinheim : Wiley, 2020) Wang, Jiawei; Medina Sanchez, Mariana; Yin, Yin; Herzer, Raffael; Ma, Libo; Schmidt, Oliver G.
By virtue of the well-developed micro- and nanofabrication technologies and rapidly progressing surface functionalization strategies, silicon-based devices have been widely recognized as a highly promising platform for the next-generation lab-on-a-chip bioanalytical systems with a great potential for point-of-care medical diagnostics. Herein, an overview of the latest advances in silicon-based integrated optofluidic label-free biosensing technologies relying on the efficient interactions between the evanescent light field at the functionalized surface and specifically bound analytes is presented. State-of-the-art technologies demonstrating label-free evanescent wave-based biomarker detection mainly encompass three device configurations, including on-chip waveguide-based interferometers, microring resonators, and photonic-crystal-based cavities. Moreover, up-to-date strategies for elevating the sensitivities and also simplifying the sensing processes are discussed. Emerging laboratory prototypes with advanced integration and packaging schemes incorporating automatic microfluidic components or on-chip optoelectronic devices lead to one significant step forward in real applications of decentralized diagnostics. Besides, particular attention is paid to currently commercialized label-free optical bioanalytical models on the market. Finally, the prospects are elaborated with several research routes toward chip-scale, low-cost, highly sensitive, multi-functional, and user-friendly bioanalytical systems benefiting to global healthcare. © 2020 The Authors.
