The paper seeks to make a glass industry recommendation on the preferred method for the measurement of particulate emissions in the waste gases from glass melting tanks. A compilation of work is presented carried out by laboratories in five European countries to compare the commonly used methods. The methods are described briefly with particular reference to the principal differences of filter configuration, materials and situation. The variables have been studied and recommendations are made on the necessity to standardise certain aspects. The methods have been compared by simultaneous measurements on different types of furnaces with different fuels and glass compositions. The principal difference between the methods lies in whether the filter is situated inside, or outside, the stack. It is concluded that in-stack filtration should be preferred since it avoids the errors and uncertainties associated with the condensation of solid and liquid phases in out-of-stack filter systems.ger
