Long-term stability of GaAs/AlAs terahertz quantum-cascade lasers

2022, Schrottke, L., Lü, X., Biermann, K., Gellie, P., Grahn, H.T.

We have investigated high-performance GaAs/AlAs terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) with respect to the long-term stability of their operating parameters. The output power of lasers that contain an additional, thick AlAs refractive-index contrast layer underneath the cascade structure decreases after three months by about 35%. The deterioration of these lasers is attributed to the oxidation processes in this contrast layer starting from the facets. However, GaAs/AlAs THz QCLs with an Al0.9Ga0.1As refractive-index contrast layer exhibit long-term stability of the operating parameters over many years even when they are exposed to atmospheric conditions. Therefore, these lasers are promising high-power radiation sources in the terahertz spectral region for commercial applications.

Focus on nonlinear terahertz studies

2014, Leitenstorfer, A., Nelson, K.A., Reimann, K., Tanaka, K.

Resulting from the availability of improved sources, research in the terahertz (THz) spectral range has increased dramatically over the last decade, leading essentially to the disappearance of the so-called 'THz gap'. While most work to date has been carried out with THz radiation of low field amplitude, a growing number of experiments are using THz radiation with large electric and magnetic fields that induce nonlinearities in the system under study. This 'focus on' collection contains a number of articles, both experimental and theoretical, in the new subfield of THz nonlinear optics and spectroscopy on various systems, among them molecular gases, superconductors, semiconductors, antiferromagnets and graphene.

Observation of energetic terahertz pulses from relativistic solid density plasmas

2012, Gopal, A., May, T., Herzer, S., Reinhard, A., Minardi, S., Schubert, M., Dillner, U., Pradarutti, B., Polz, J., Gaumnitz, T., Kaluza, M.C., Jäckel, O., Riehemann, S., Ziegler, W., Gemuend, H-P., Meyer, H-G., Paulus, G.G.

We report the first experimental observation of terahertz (THz) radiation from the rear surface of a solid target while interacting with an intense laser pulse. Experimental and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the observed THz radiation is mostly emitted at large angles to the target normal. Numerical results point out that a large part of the emission originates from a micron-scale plasma sheath at the rear surface of the target, which is also responsible for the ion acceleration. This opens a perspective for the application of THz radiation detection for on-site diagnostics of particle acceleration in laser-produced plasmas.

Terahertz emission from lithium doped silicon under continuous wave interband optical excitation

2015, Andrianov, A.V., Zakhar'in, A.O., Zhukavin, R.K., Shastin, V.N., Abrosimov, N.V.

We report on experimental observation and study of terahertz emission from lithium doped silicon crystals under continuous wave band-to-band optical excitation. It is shown that radiative transitions of electrons from 2P excited states of lithium donor to the 1S(A1) donor ground state prevail in the emission spectrum. The terahertz emission occurs due to capture of nonequilibrium electrons to charged donors, which in turn are generated in the crystal as a result of impurity assisted electron-hole recombination. Besides the intracentre radiative transitions the terahertz emission spectrum exhibits also features at about 12.7 and 15.27 meV, which could be related to intraexciton transitions and transitions from the continuum to the free exciton ground state.
