    Unlocking the hidden realms: analysing the Ukrainian journal landscape with Ulrichsweb

    Although Ukraine is one of the leading countries in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of its number of scholarly journals, most of these journals are not widely recognized by the scientific community. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of scholarly journal publishing in Ukraine, using data from the Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory. The study aims to provide insights into the quantity and characteristics of Ukrainian journals, with a specific focus on historical context, publisher diversity, language of publication, and subject distribution. The findings reveal that Ulrichsweb encompasses details on over 1,500 active Ukrainian journal titles, some tracing their origins back to the 19th century. Notably, 85% of these journals are disseminated by academic institutions, including universities and research organizations. This study exemplifies the utility of Ulrichsweb as a valuable tool for investigating national scholarly journals underrepresented in other databases.

    As we mark the fifth anniversary of the alpha release of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), it is both timely and exhilarating to celebrate the significant strides made in this pioneering project. We designed this book as a tribute to the evolution and achievements of the ORKG and as a practical guide encapsulating its essence in a form that resonates with both the general reader and the specialist. The ORKG has opened a new era in the way scholarly knowledge is curated, managed, and disseminated. By transforming vast arrays of unstructured narrative text into structured, machine-processable knowledge, the ORKG has emerged as an essential service with sophisticated functionalities. Over the past five years, our team has developed the ORKG into a vibrant platform that enhances the accessibility and visibility of scientific research. This book serves as a non-technical guide and a comprehensive reference for new and existing users that outlines the ORKG’s approach, technologies, and its role in revolutionizing scholarly communication. By elucidating how the ORKG facilitates the collection, enhancement, and sharing of knowledge, we invite readers to appreciate the value and potential of this groundbreaking digital tool presented in a tangible form. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming unveiling of promising new features and tools at the fifth-year celebration of the ORKG’s alpha release. These innovations are set to redefine the boundaries of machine assistance enabled by research knowledge graphs. Among these enhancements, you can expect more intuitive interfaces that simplify the user experience, and enhanced machine learning models that improve the automation and accuracy of data curation. We also included a glossary tailored to clarifying key terms and concepts associated with the ORKG to ensure that all readers, regardless of their technical background, can fully engage with and understand the content presented. This book transcends the boundaries of a typical technical report. We crafted this as an inspiration for future applications, a testament to the ongoing evolution in scholarly communication that invites further collaboration and innovation.     Використання інноваційних інструментів для підтримки та моніторингу відкритої науки

    Мета статті – дослідити, описати та проаналізувати принципи роботи, зокрема функціональні можливості, сучасних сервісів та інструментів, призначених для моніторингу, підтримки й аналізу розповсюдження результатів наукових досліджень у вільному доступі, які можуть бути використані бібліотекарями для популяризації відкритої науки. Методологія дослідження ґрунтується на комплексі загальнонаукових методів і підходів. Зокрема, було застосовано контент-аналіз офіційних вебсторінок інструментів і сервісів, метод узагальнення, системний, структурно-функціональний та інформаційно-аналітичний методи, що дали змогу підкреслити необхідність створення належної інфраструктури для розвитку відкритої науки. Наукова новизна. У статті розглянуто сучасні інструменти, сервіси та застосунки, такі як OpenAlex, BISON, COKI Open Access Dashboard, Journal Tracker Tool, OPTIMETA Plugins та ін., для підтримки практик відкритої наукової комунікації. Встановлено, що вдосконалення відкритої, некомерційної інфраструктури має потенціал для значного пришвидшення переходу на відкриту модель наукової комунікації. Висновки. Результати дослідження засвідчили наявність інноваційних сервісів для аналізу та моніторингу, які можуть використовуватися бібліотекарями, науковцями та усіма зацікавленими в розвитку відкритого доступу. Ці інструменти є значущими для розширення і демократизації доступу до знань, оскільки сприяють подоланню територіальних, інституційних і дисциплінарних бар'єрів. Удосконалення відкритої, неприбуткової інфраструктури має бути ключовим завданням на шляху до впровадження практик відкритої науки. Сучасним бібліотечним працівникам важливо опанувати навички роботи з відкритими інструментами для моніторингу, аналізу та підтримки практик відкритої наукової комунікації, оскільки очевидним є потенціал онлайн-інструментів у науковій комунікації та їхня здатність поширювати результати наукової діяльності.

    Electronic Preservation Project for Ukrainian Open Access Journals (EPP UA) to Safeguard Research Content during the War

    This conference paper presents an overview of the ongoing initiative EPP UA — Electronic Preservation Project for Ukrainian Open Access Journals, initiated by TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library. The EPP UA aims to address the pressing need for preservation of open access journals published and hosted by academic institutions in Ukraine. The heightened risk of destruction from the Russian military invasion jeopardizes both the physical infrastructure of academic institutions and the scholarly knowledge stored within their servers. Given that Ukrainian OA journals rarely utilize long-term preservation services, this initiative emphasizes the urgency to ensure accessibility to research content for future generations of scientists and readers.

    Упровадження принципів відкритого доступу в Україні: сучасний стан і перспективи розвитку

    The purpose of the article is to conduct a comprehensive, objective and critical analysis of the results of research on open access in Ukraine to assess the current state of the topic and identify the aspects which require deeper study in order to develop an effective mechanism for implementing the principles of open access in practice. Research methods. The method of narrative literature review with a defined search strategy and criteria for selecting publications in four databases, such as Dimensions, Scopus, Web of Science and the depository of electronic copies “Scientific Periodicals of Ukraine” was used. The inclusion criteria were articles published by authors affiliated with Ukrainian institutions. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the literature analysis helped to expand and deepen knowledge about the thematic areas of open access research in Ukraine; to identify previously unknown links and contradictions between studies; and to identify areas that require further studies, which include, in particular, the analysis of factors and barriers that facilitate or prevent Ukrainian authors from disseminating their works in open access, the dynamics of growth and peculiarities of the distribution of the share of open access publications by year and field of study. Conclusions. Open access is one of the main components of Open Science. It serves as a tool for accelerating knowledge sharing, developing science, helping to eliminate inequality, and helping to solve several global problems. The research of Ukrainian scientists focuses on four primary areas of open access research: the development of open access policies at the level of institutions and the state, the introduction of institutional repositories, the launch of open access journals, and the regulation of copyright in open scientific communication.
